Fig. 2 - Outline of the study. Main (post-randomisation) phase.
Footnotes for Fig. 2.
1 Stratification according to the ‘hypo’ / low BG risk and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels of the subjects
- 2
The questionnaire (accessible at this Website) aims to determine additional outcome measures, and covers issues regarding: (i) patient self-confidence, (ii) quality of life and metabolic control, (iii) social and emotional impact of diabetes on lifestyle, (iv) attitudes towards self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), (v) prior knowledge about diabetes, and (vi) ‘what-if’ type questions and knowledge about insulin dosage calculation
- 3
In addition to completing the questionnaire, subjects will also be requested to complete a diary with fasting, pre-prandial and 2-hour post-prandial blood glucose data
- HbA1c
HbA1c will be sampled prior to the start of Phase 1 (Baseline) and one month after the end of the last lesson. Furthermore HbA1c will be measured one month after the end of Phase 2 (6-week follow-up) for the subjects in Arm B
4 The delay will allow re-sampling of HbA1c levels in the cross-over subjects and also reduce any ‘carry over’ effect on blood glucose levels – from the conventional lessons (Phase 1) to the simulator-based lessons (Phase 2). The final HbA1c for Arm B will be sampled 1 month after the end of Phase 2, about 20 weeks after the first sample
