A PROSPECTIVE RANDOMISED-CONTROLLED CLINICAL TRIAL METHODOLOGY FOR EVALUATING THE TEACHING UTILITY OF THE AIDA INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL DIABETES SIMULATOR (including preliminary results)
INTRODUCTION
AIDA is an interactive educational diabetes simulator which has been made available without charge on the Internet. Since its launch on the World Wide Web in 1996 overpeople have visited these AIDA Web pages and over
copies of the program have been downloaded from here free-of-charge.
Statement of significance. The AIDA software is believed to be of use in recreating clinically realistic diabetes situations for interactive simulation [1-4]. However, despite its widespread usage, its actual utility for supporting the education of people with diabetes mellitus remains to be objectively demonstrated in a randomised-controlled clinical trial setting.
Methodology. These ‘AIDA Evaluation’ Web pages overview a prospective, randomised-controlled trial (RCT) methodology for formally evaluating the educational utility of an interactive diabetes simulator, like AIDA. Preliminary results from a pilot study applying the methodology are presented. For an overview / demo of what AIDA can do, please click here.
What we can offer. Setting up a clinical study can be a considerable amount of work – coming up with the idea, writing and refining the protocol, drawing up a consent form and questionnaires (as required), doing a pilot study to establish the feasibility of the approach and to provide data for power calculations (for sample size estimates). With the current evaluation protocol for assessing the educational utility of AIDA much of this preliminary work has already been done. In this respect, towards the end of this series of Web pages we list some of the things with which we can offer help, if you or your colleagues might be interested in assisting with evaluating AIDA further, locally in your unit(s).
